We are now looking for two
Doctoral Researchers in the area of AI/ML for wireless communication.
The objective of research is to define the ramifications for applying Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in future wireless communications networks. The focus is on industrially relevant topics that push the frontiers of technology towards next generation wireless, building deep know-how on using Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) for creating competitive 6G radio products. The positions are part of the Nokia XG Industrial PhD Program, and research will be performed at Aalto University in collaboration with researchers at Nokia.
Your role and goals
We are searching for two Doctoral Researchers to perform cutting edge research on learning radios and AI/ML for cell-free massive MIMO. Your role includes algorithm development, developing fundamental analytic understanding of underlying principles, and verifying methods with simulations/emulations. You publish research results in high-quality scientific papers and interact with other team members and industrial partners.
Your network and team
The positions are in the Communication Theory Research group led by Prof. O. Tirkkonen, at the Department of Information and Communications Engineering of Aalto School of Electrical Engineering. The research group has a long experience in industrially relevant research pushing the theoretical boundaries of physical layer wireless communications systems. The supervisor of the theses will be Prof. O. Tirkkonen. Research will be performed in close collaboration with Nokia, and each doctoral researcher will have an advisor from Nokia.
Your experience and ambitions
Required qualifications:
- Master’s degree (or in final stages of M.Sc. studies with thesis submitted) in communications engineering, signal processing, computer science, or in a related field.
- Understanding of the fundamentals of wireless communications
- Understanding of the fundamentals of machine learning
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Finnish language is not required.

What we offer
You have the possibility to become a PhD in the rapidly progressing field of AI/ML for wireless communications, with cross-domain fertilization guaranteeing both scientific relevance and industrial applicability.
Doctoral studies at Aalto University take approximately four years and this position will be funded based on an initial 2-year contract + 2 years extension. The starting salary for a Doctoral Researcher is approximately 2700 EUR/month. The planned starting date is April 1, 2024.
The primary workplace is in Otaniemi, Espoo, Finland. The Otaniemi campus is a thriving and connected community of 100 nationalities, 13,000 students and 4,500 employees.
