The Philosophy Ph.D. program produces teachers and scholars who address living questions through perspectives grounded in a systematic understanding of the history of philosophy. We welcome a diversity of approaches to the study of philosophy, including: analytic, continental, feminist, literary, multicultural, and pragmatic. Above all, we prepare our students to excel as members of scholarly and teaching communities.
We have identified seven areas of inquiry integral to the research and teaching of our faculty:
- Art and Culture,
- Continental Philosophy,
- Ethics, Politics, and Law,
- History of Philosophy,
- Philosophy of the Americas,
- Philosophical Psychology, and
- Gender, Race, and Difference.
Contributions from our faculty have impacted these conversations within and sometimes beyond the discipline of philosophy. Each area is also a point of overlap with many of our affiliated faculty whose work concretely enriches our own.
Across these areas and beyond, our faculty are involved in other Emory departments, programs, and initiatives, such as American Studies, Comparative Literature, Disability Studies, Global and Postcolonial Studies, the James Wheldon Institute of Race and Difference, Psychoanalytic Studies, and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
Our programs also benefit from the robust participation of many affiliated faculty, providing a rich, multi-disciplinary context for course work and research.
